Day 14: Be a hummingbird

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Do (good) deeds according to your capacity…God does not grow tired of giving rewards unless you tire of doing good…The (good) deeds most loved by God are those that are done regularly, even if they are small.”  Fiqh-us-Sunnah, Volume 2, Number 24
It had poured all night, and was still raining when we woke up for suhoor.  Allah ka shukr. We needed the rain.  Saanya and I stayed awake until sunrise, for the MoverMoms "Sunrise for Somalia" walk along the C&O canal near our home.   Just a few MoverMoms gathered (plus a MoverDad and a Moverdog). We walked and talked -- about fasting, about Somalia, about our children. Ours was, literally, a walk in the park.   The people of Somalia have been walking 15, even 30 days, to get to camps with little food or water.   The reports are beyond heartbreaking.   Parents burying their children - one after another after another -- unable to reach safety or sustenance. May Allah protect them and alleviate their suffering.  Ameen.
The problem is so massive. Our effort seems so miniscule.  We raised about $800 for Islamic Relief.  But when I start thinking of how big the world's problems are and how small I feel to address them, I'm reminded of a story that my dear friend Wangari Maathai tells so beautifully.  Please watch it below, and I'm sure you'll be inspired -- to be a hummingbird.
